Happy Birthday Alexandra!

It's hard to believe that it was only 4 years ago, when I held my little angel in my hands. For the first time, we were parents, and this amazing little life was looking to us to help her grow in the world. Now, 4 year's later, my little angel has turned into a princess. Full of spirit, energy, mischief and love - she continues to brighten our days. Alexandra, happy 4th birthday. May every day and every year be wonderful.

Guitar anyone?

The family is learning to play guitar... well, in theory. Jill, if you're watching this, we promise we are taking GREAT care of your guitar :-)

By the way, whoever said Matthew could sing must be tone deaf.

Giving thanks!

Lately, Alex and Reese have really been at each other's throats. Reese seems to have figured out how to really annoy her big sister, and Alex (bless her) doesn't fight back to much, but gets pretty upset.  So, in this time of giving thanks, we were so very happy to see a rare glimpse of sisterly love yesterday.  Take a look for yourself...

Could this be a trend of things to come?  We can only hope!  Here are some more fun shots, have a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Alex and Mommy reading a book about airplanes...

Alex: "What is this plane?"
Mommy: "That's a jet plane."
Alex: "I know that. I already read this page before."

Alex: "What kind is this plane?"
Mommy: "That's a C5 jet plane."
Alex: "I know that."

Alex: "What is that plane mommy?"
Mommy: "That's a stealth fighter."
Alex: "I KNOW THAT!"

Tokyo, Vegas, and SF

What do these 3 cities all have in common? I was in all of them in the last 3 days. But that is really inconsequential. I was just looking for some reason to post something, because we are way too stale at posting new stuff.

Here a fun picture that we took when Alex, Reese and I were at the park last week.

Alex: "What's Reese doing?"
Daddy: "We're playing basketball, want to play?"
Alex: "No, I'm too princessy"
(Alex, dressed in full Princess attire including white ballet dress, crown, plastic jewel ring, and size 11 high heels.)

Office 2.0 Questions...

Update - 09/06/2008: The form is now closed, and here are the results:

I gave a talk at Office 2.0 today, and as part of the demo, I showed how easy it was to create a form in Google spreadsheets, and then share it with the world. Here is a little form that I made available to the audience (as part of the demo) and they rated my performance.

A future in advertising...

Alex and Reese stopped by the SF office with me yesterday, and while there we filmed what could be the next big Google TV commercial?

Reese definitely has the 'pouting model' bit down at the end. You be the judge! :-)

Little Mermaids

Alex, and best friend Sadie, have been captivated by mermaids recently. I guess it started with the Disney movie, although neither is all that into watching the film. But they did manage to find excitement at the local carwash...

You have to keep your eyes open, you never know where the next piece of entertainment is going to come from.

A belated birthday (party)!

We had a fun-filled party extravaganza for Reese on Sunday! The carnival theme was complete with bouncy house (or jumpy house, depending on your preference), games, and food including popcorn, corn dogs, and soft pretzels. To top it all off, Honey made an AMAZING carousel birthday cake.

Take a look at all the amazing photos that Doug took of the day's activities. Thanks to everyone who came and shared in the fun, we really had a blast!

Happy Birthday Reese!

Our little Reese is 2! It was about 2 years ago right now when she entered the world.

Don't ask why there is only one candle... we don't know.

and the winner is.... ALEX?!?

This just in. The video finish from the Alcatraz Tri last weekend shows convincing evidence that Alex did in fact beat Mommy in the race. Watch closely at about the 20 second mark, and you'll see a determined little runner beat mommy across the finish line.

Also, note that if you want to watch a higher quality version of this, watch this video on YouTube directly. You can also see some annotations on the YouTube site that don't seem to show up on the embedded version.

No one has ever survived this swim

I think I've heard at least 3 or 4 people respond to the idea of swimming from Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay back to the marina in this way. To which Krista has been heard to respond, "Yes, thousands of people die every year in this race!" Not only did Krista survive, but she nailed the swim, doing it in a little over 33 minutes.

She finished the race today in a blazing 3 hours and 11 minutes, mostly thanks to her cheering squad.

We are all VERY proud of you Mommy!

Unemployed parents?

Now that Alex has taken over the task of reading books to Reese (and trust me, Reese LOVES to read books), its hard to say what we will do with all of our free time?

Open up and say AHHHHHHHHH!

Today was a first for us... Alex went to the dentist! (Daddy went to the dentist too, but that wasn't the first time for that, thankfully). She was amazing!

Not only did she do everything that Dr. Carmine asked, but she was enthusiastic and loved it. It was a perfect checkup, including scraping the plaque, flossing, polishing, and counting her teeth (checking for cavities).

I was so impressed with her, and very, very proud. It was really a cool experience!

Check out the full set of photos here.

Alex: "Daddy, you can't be in our family because you are a boy."

Daddy: "What?"

Alex: "We don't have boys in our family."

Take your Alex to Google day

This past Thursday, April 24, 2008 was "Take your daughter and son to work day", so Alex and I ventured to the Googleplex. In true Google fashion, they planned quite a shindig, including shirts and all. I made the mistake of telling Alex about the event over a week in advance, which meant leading up to the big day, every morning she said, "Daddy, are we going to work today?"

When the big day arrive, Alex got all decked out in her Google gear, messenger bag and all.

We headed to the bus stop and awaited the shuttle.

When we got to Google after the long bus ride (about 5 minutes in, Alex in a loud voice asked "is this going to take a long time?" in a very loud voice, causing everyone on the fairly quite bus to crack up!), we toured around campus, checked out the meeting rooms, and met the TRex!

It was an awesome day, filled with bouncy houses, bubbles, lots of food, and even some frisbee on the lawn. Alex had a blast, and can't understand why I wouldn't be super excited to go to work every day. Good question, perspective is everything.

An Interview with a 3 year old

Alexandra, Reese and I (Matthew) were playing with our new Flip camera from Google/YouTube. Its a simple little camera that makes it very easy to take and upload video to YouTube (or other services). We decided to do a formal press interview with Alex... here are the results:

Put on your dancin' shoes

Alex and best friend Sadie have officially launched their dance career. They now attend the "Tutu School" (aptly named, given you are required to wear one) and had their first ballet lesson.

Its makeup day! Three new entries….

Editorial note: we have been very delinquent in posting, thereby sacrificing all of our readers. So here are three new entries...

El Primer Día de Escuela

Reese started at Hola Kids! “Hassa mañana!” she called out when we left the first day. A natural. Just hope she can roll her r’s better than her mom. Alex is jealous so she’s trying more Spanish now too. Whatever it takes, baby.

The Chariot

My favorite new garage-space-taking-up contraption. And so well named! Queen Alex and Princess Reese crawl into the Chariot, put on their “crowns,” and gleefully accept some food-bribe to sit there and be happy. Either Matthew or I pull them with our bikes – instantly doubling the time it takes to get anywhere. This weekend they sat, bundled from the cold, for a whole hour and a half while we rode to Tiburon. At the end was a reward for all of us…. a 45 minute ferry ride back to SF (which avoids the ridiculous hills in that direction)! The Chariot really is marvelous – I’d recommend it. I wonder if they make one with a DVD player installed in it?

I will forever remember this Easter as the first time Alex got on a chairlift and SKIIED! Course she was with us and not usually supporting her own weight, but the chairlift made it seem real. Alex was very focused. “No, daddy, I’m not going to do a wedge. That will make me slow down.” Apparently skiing to her is all about speed. So much for cross-country. Someone get that kid a helmet!

Alex: "Crocky is my best friend" (speaking about her stuffed crocodile)
Daddy: "I thought Sadie Jane was your best friend?"
Alex: "I can have lots of best friends."
Daddy: "Can I be your best friend too?"
Alex: "No, you are a grown up. Grown ups can't be friends."

Girls just wanna have fun

And here are our girls, having a ball.

A lollipop amongst friends

Alex and good friend Cara share lollipops, kisses and hugs after a wonderful Saturday morning brunch with the Nelsons on a rainy day. (make sure you go to the end of the photo slideshow for some "bonus" material)

Our Girls!

If you ignore the various food items on their face, this is the best picture of the two girls that we have (in recent memory).
